No. There's a specific reason why. Our beds are built the same way as original antique iron beds from the late 1800s: thick-walled steel tubing, solid iron rod, and hand-poured metal castings at every structural joint. The headboard is one solid welded piece. So is the footboard. The frames are manufactured in the same Los Angeles facility as the beds themselves by our manufacturing partners, ensuring a precise, tight fit with no movement. Squeaking is a problem with original antiques that have lost their side rails, or with overseas beds made from aluminum with screwed-on castings and mismatched rail systems. Our American-made construction eliminates both causes entirely.

Are the beds hollow? I've heard iron beds are hollow and that concerns me.

Iron tubing must be hollow; solid iron would be impossibly heavy to move. But hollow doesn't mean weak. We use the thickest-walled steel tubing in the industry. Combine that with solid iron rod (not hollow) and hand-poured metal castings at every weld joint, and you have a bed that is structurally stronger than anything mass-produced overseas. The castings aren't decorative covers; they're structural reinforcements poured directly around the weld points.

How is an iron bed different from a cheap metal bed?

The difference is in the materials and method. Our beds use three components: thick-walled steel tubing, solid iron rod, and hand-poured metal castings. Inexpensive beds use thin aluminum tubing, plastic or screwed-on castings, and frames made overseas with no relationship to the headboard. The frames are built in the same Los Angeles facility as the headboard and footboard by our manufacturing partners, which is why they fit together without wobble. Every finish is hand-applied by an individual artisan, not sprayed by a machine.

Built correctly, indefinitely. Original antique iron beds from the 1880s are still in use today; that's the construction standard we hold ourselves to. Can I get finish samples before committing?

Yes, for our American Classics and Dream Gallery collections. Once you place your order, you have a two-week window to request physical finish samples. We'll send them to you and wait for your final selection before production begins. For our North Haven Traditions and Iron Art collections, we don't offer physical samples, but we're happy to walk you through every finish option using the detailed photos on our website.

Will my finished bed look exactly like the photo on the website?

Close, but not identical, and that's intentional. Because every finish is hand-applied by an individual artisan, slight variations in tone and texture are normal. This is part of what makes each bed unique. The hand-applied technique adds age, warmth, and depth that machine-applied finishes simply cannot replicate. Variation in hand-applied finish is not considered a defect and is not grounds for return.

Can I adjust the headboard or footboard height?

Yes, for our American Classics and Dream Gallery collections. Custom height adjustments are available for a $165 upcharge. The adjustment is made by lengthening or shortening the leg tubing; it doesn't alter the design of the headboard or footboard itself. Maximum recommended height adjustment is 12–13 inches. Height customization is not available on North Haven Traditions or Iron Art.

Can I adjust the rail height (the clearance under the bed)?

Yes, for American Classics and Dream Gallery. Standard rail height is 9" from the floor, which can be raised or lowered by repositioning the bolts welded onto the legs. North Haven and Iron Art come in two fixed options: 8" (for box spring and mattress) or 12" (platform, mattress only). Adjusting rail height changes under-bed clearance but does not change headboard or footboard height.

Yes. Extra Long Twin and Extra Long Full sizes (80" mattress length instead of the standard 75") are available for a $200 upcharge.

Can I convert a standard bed to a canopy style?

On most American Classics and Iron Art beds, yes. A canopy conversion is available for a flat $450 upcharge. The one exception is models without corner castings, such as the Bronson and Brunswick, where the design doesn't accommodate a canopy. Are your iron bed frames compatible with adjustable bases / mechanical mattresses?

Yes, in most cases. The slats or box spring can be removed and the adjustable base dropped in. Our beds accommodate standard U.S. mattress sizes, so as long as your adjustable base matches the standard size chart for your bed size, you should be all set. What's the difference between an Eastern King and a California King?

Accepted Answer

This is the most common ordering mistake we see, so please confirm before placing your order. Eastern King (also called Standard King) is 76" wide x 80" long: wider but shorter. California King is 72" wide x 84" long: narrower but longer. They are not interchangeable. If you have an existing mattress, measure it before ordering.

What's the difference between Headboard Only, Headboard + Frame, and Complete Bed?

Headboard Only: Includes the headboard and mounting hardware. Pre-drilled with 15 holes to attach to most standard bed frames.  Headboard + Frame: Includes the headboard plus a matching mattress frame (no footboard). Frame comes in matte black or gunmetal grey depending on collection.  Complete Bed: Includes headboard, footboard, and the full frame system. This is our most popular configuration and provides the most stability and the classic full iron bed look.

If I buy just a headboard, can I attach it to my existing frame?

Accepted Answer

You can, but we can't guarantee there won't be some wobble. Mattress store frames are typically manufactured overseas and aren't designed to fit our headboards as precisely as the frames built in the same Los Angeles facility by our manufacturing partners. For the most solid, squeak-free setup, we recommend the Headboard + Frame or Complete Bed. Headboard Only is a good choice for a rental, guest room, or vacation home where a small amount of movement isn't critical.

Do I need a box spring?

All of our models accommodate a box spring. Most Iron Art and North Haven Traditions models can also accommodate a mattress only (platform style). You can select which configuration you'd like on the individual product page.

How long does it take to receive my bed?

Accepted Answer

All of our beds are made to order. Production times vary by collection, typically 6–14 weeks (the exact window is shown on each product page). After production is complete, transit typically takes 1–2 weeks depending on your location. You'll receive shipping and tracking information by email when your bed leaves our facility.

We use specialized white-glove furniture freight carriers, not standard freight carriers, which cause too much damage to furniture. Once your bed ships, the delivery carrier will contact you directly to schedule a delivery appointment at a time that works for you.

Two options:  First Threshold Delivery (standard): Your bed is delivered to the first dry, secure area of your home, typically inside your front door or in your garage. No assembly included. What should I expect on delivery day?

You'll be given a 3–4 hour delivery window. A responsible adult must be present to accept delivery. Inspect all packaging carefully before signing. If you have First Threshold delivery, note any dented corners, tears, or punctures on the carrier's paperwork before signing. If you see obvious damage to the item inside the packaging, you have the right to reject the delivery and contact us immediately.

How should I prepare for delivery?

Orders with shipping damage that are properly documented at delivery will be replaced at no charge to you. The key word is "documented." For First Threshold deliveries, inspect the boxes before signing and note any dented corners, tears, or punctures on the carrier's paperwork. We cannot accept responsibility for damage on items signed for without noting the damage. If you see obvious damage to the bed itself inside the packaging, reject the delivery and contact us immediately at (800) 378-1742.

You have 14 days from delivery to report any damage or an incorrect item, documented with photos. Please also note any visible damage on the delivery receipt at the time of delivery. Because every bed is custom-built to order, we do not accept change-of-mind returns and we do not offer exchanges. Can I cancel my order?

Accepted Answer

Within 72 hours of placing your order, you may cancel for any reason and receive a full refund. After 72 hours, your order has entered production, so a 50% cancellation fee applies if you still wish to cancel — because the bed is custom-built to order and materials and labor are already committed. Once the order ships, it can no longer be canceled. Dream Gallery and customized orders (custom finishes, adjusted heights, bespoke projects) follow the same 72-hour full-refund window but become fully non-refundable once they enter production. Approved refunds are issued within 5–10 business days.

What if the bed doesn't fit in my home?

Before ordering, customers are responsible for measuring elevators, stairways, ceiling clearance, hallways, and doorways to ensure the bed can be moved to its final location. We're happy to provide box dimensions before your order ships; just ask. Inability to fit a bed into your home after delivery does not qualify as a manufacturing defect or shipping damage.

At American Iron Beds, yes, intentionally. The construction of a properly built iron bed hasn't fundamentally changed in 150 years: thick-walled steel tubing, solid iron rod, and hand-poured metal castings at the structural joints. What we've improved is wall thickness and finish technology. The bones of the construction are the same as beds that are still in use from the 1880s. That's the standard that produces a bed with a lifetime structural warranty.

What's the difference between a modern iron bed and an actual antique?

The construction method is identical to the original. The key differences are condition, customization, and warranty. Original antiques from the 1880s–1930s are beautiful but often have lost their original side rails (which causes squeaking), may have finish wear, and can't be ordered in the size you need. Our beds use the same methods but are built new, in the size and finish you choose, with a lifetime structural warranty. They won't squeak.

What's the difference between wrought iron and cast iron in a bed?

Modern iron beds use a combination of both, though terminology gets used loosely. The structural tubing is steel. Solid rod sections are iron. The ornamental and structural castings (the poured joints and decorative elements) are cast iron. "Wrought iron bed" is largely a style and heritage term rather than a precise material description. What matters for quality is the thickness of the tubing, whether rod is solid or hollow, and whether castings are hand-poured structural pieces or decorative covers screwed on after the fact.

Do iron beds rust?

Not under normal indoor conditions with proper finish maintenance. All of our finishes (powder coat, hand-rubbed patina, and specialty finishes) are applied to protect the metal. Surface rust can develop if the finish is chipped and left unaddressed in a humid environment (coastal climates, bathrooms). Touch up any chips with matching finish paint. Our beds are not designed for outdoor use.

The EMF concern around metal beds is largely a myth that circulates online. There is no credible scientific evidence that sleeping in an iron bed meaningfully increases electromagnetic field exposure or causes health harm. Metal objects don't amplify EMF from household electronics; they can redirect existing fields, but at the distances and field strengths in a typical bedroom, no effect has been demonstrated to be clinically significant. If this is a concern for you, we'd encourage you to review the available science rather than anecdotal sources.

No. Our beds are designed to fit all standard U.S. mattress sizes and work with any mattress type: innerspring, memory foam, hybrid, latex. Memory foam and hybrid mattresses generally do well without a box spring.
