Headboard Only vs Full Iron Bed Frame: Which Should You Buy?
By American Iron Beds · Handcrafting Iron Beds in Los Angeles Since 1998

One of the first decisions you'll make when ordering an iron bed is how much bed you actually want. Do you buy just the headboard and pair it with a frame you already own? Do you add a matched frame without a footboard? Or do you go with the complete bed — headboard, footboard, and full frame?
Each configuration looks different, feels different, costs different, and performs differently over time. We offer all three options and we sell all three regularly, so this isn't a guide designed to push you toward the most expensive choice. It's an honest comparison to help you pick the one that fits your bedroom, your budget, and your expectations.
The Three Configurations Explained
Before comparing them, here's exactly what each configuration includes and how it works.
Headboard Only
You receive the iron headboard and mounting hardware. The headboard is pre-drilled with 15 holes spaced to accommodate most standard bed frames. You supply your own bed frame — either one you already own, or a standard metal frame from a mattress store.
The headboard attaches to the frame via bolts through the pre-drilled holes. The headboard stands upright behind the mattress, supported by the connection to the frame. No wall mounting is required in most cases.
Headboard + Frame (No Footboard)
You receive the iron headboard plus a matched mattress frame built in the same workshop. No footboard. The frame comes in matte black or gunmetal grey depending on the collection. If you want the frame painted to match your headboard finish, that's available for an additional charge.
The headboard connects directly to the matched frame using a bolt-and-hook system engineered for a tight, secure fit. The bed is freestanding.
Complete Bed (Headboard + Footboard + Frame)
You receive the iron headboard, a matching footboard, and the full frame system. Everything is built in the same workshop and designed to fit together precisely. This creates a rigid headboard-footboard-frame box that is the most stable configuration possible.
The complete bed is our most popular option — roughly 85% of our orders — and it's what most people picture when they think of an iron bed.
Side-by-Side Comparison

| Stability | Depends on your frame | Excellent (matched fit) | Best (rigid box) |
| Noise over time | Possible wobble/noise | Silent | Silent |
| Visual impact | Headboard is focal point | Headboard + clean frame | Full iron bed look |
| Footboard | None | None | Matching footboard |
| Space at foot of bed | Open | Open | Footboard present |
| Approximate price range | $500–$1,400 | $800–$2,200 | $1,200–$4,000+ |
| Best for | Guest rooms, rentals, budget | Small bedrooms, no-footboard preference | Primary bedrooms, classic look |
Stability: The Honest Trade-Off
This is the most important practical difference between the three configurations, and we want to be completely upfront about it.
Headboard Only with a third-party frame. When you attach our headboard to a frame that wasn't built in the same workshop, the fit between the headboard and the frame won't be as precise as a matched system. Standard retail bed frames are typically manufactured overseas and designed to be universal — they're built to work with everything, which means they're optimized for nothing. The bolt holes may not align perfectly with our pre-drilled pattern, and the connection points may have slight play.
The result is that there may be some wobble at the headboard-to-frame connection. The bed will be functional and the headboard will stay upright, but it may not feel rock-solid. This is the most common source of customer dissatisfaction with headboard-only purchases, and we'd rather tell you now than have you find out after delivery.
Headboard + Frame. The matched frame eliminates the wobble issue entirely. Because the frame is built in the same workshop as the headboard, the bolt-and-hook connections are engineered for that specific headboard. The fit is tight. The bed is silent. No wobble, no play, no noise.
Complete Bed. The headboard-footboard-frame system creates a rigid box. The footboard acts as a structural counterpoint to the headboard, and the side rails lock everything together. This is the most stable configuration possible and the one that feels the most substantial.
After 27 years of selling all three configurations, here's the pattern we see: customers who buy headboard-only for a primary bedroom come back for the matched frame about 30% of the time. Customers who buy headboard + frame or complete bed almost never have stability concerns. If the bed is for your primary bedroom and you plan to sleep in it every night for years, the matched frame is worth the investment.
Appearance: How Each Configuration Looks
The visual difference between the three configurations is significant, and it affects how the bedroom feels.
Headboard Only puts all the visual focus on the headboard as a wall statement. There's no footboard at the foot of the bed, so the mattress and bedding are the only things visible from that angle. The bed reads as a headboard with a mattress rather than a complete piece of furniture. In rooms where the bed is against the wall and you rarely see the foot (like many master bedrooms), this can work perfectly. The headboard does the heavy lifting and the rest doesn't matter.
Headboard + Frame gives you the same open look at the foot of the bed, but the frame is visible along the sides. Our matched frames in matte black or gunmetal grey are clean and unobtrusive. They read as structural support, not decorative elements. This configuration is clean and modern, and it's the setup interior designers often choose because it emphasizes the headboard without the visual weight of a footboard.
Complete Bed is the classic iron bed look. Headboard, footboard, and visible frame create a cohesive piece of furniture that reads as intentional and complete from every angle. The footboard is especially impactful when the foot of the bed faces a doorway, a window, or a sitting area — anywhere someone's eye naturally lands. The decorative castings, scrollwork, and finish details are on full display at both ends.
One observation from years of customer photos and feedback: complete beds photograph better. If you care about how the bedroom looks in photos — for real estate, rental listings, or just personal satisfaction — the complete bed creates the most polished, intentional look.
Cost: What Each Configuration Runs
Pricing varies by design, size, and collection, but here are the general ranges to set expectations.
Headboard Only is the most affordable entry point. Depending on the design and size, headboard-only configurations typically run $500 to $1,400. This is approximately 70% of the complete bed price on most models.
Headboard + Frame adds the cost of the matched frame to the headboard price. Expect the total to run $800 to $2,200 depending on design and size. If you want the frame painted to match the headboard finish rather than standard matte black or gunmetal grey, there's an additional charge (typically $65–$120 depending on the manufacturer's collection).
Complete Bed includes headboard, footboard, and frame. This is the full price and ranges from approximately $1,200 to $4,000+ depending on design complexity, size, and finish. All orders include free First Threshold delivery (to the first dry area of your home). White Glove delivery (room placement, unpacking, and full assembly) is available for $299.
The cost-per-year perspective. Our beds come with a lifetime structural warranty and are built to last 50 to 100+ years. Even at the top of the price range, a complete bed at $4,000 amortized over 50 years costs $80 per year, or about $6.67 per month. A $200 imported bed frame that lasts 5 years costs $40 per year. The handcrafted option is less expensive over its lifespan.
When to Choose Headboard Only
Headboard only is the right choice when:
Budget is the primary constraint. If you love a particular headboard design but can't stretch the budget for the full bed right now, headboard only gets you into the design at the lowest entry point. You can always add the frame or footboard later.
The bed is for a guest room, rental property, or vacation home. In rooms where the bed isn't used nightly and wobble tolerance is higher, headboard only is a practical, cost-effective choice. The headboard provides the visual impact and the third-party frame provides basic function.
You already own a high-quality bed frame you're happy with. If you have a solid, American-made bed frame that fits your mattress well, adding our headboard to it may work fine. The wobble issue is most pronounced with lightweight imported frames.
You're pairing the headboard with a platform bed. Our headboard attaches to most platform frames via the 15 pre-drilled holes. A platform frame + our iron headboard is a clean, modern combination, especially in small bedrooms where you want a low profile. See our room layout guide for sizing tips.
When to Choose Headboard + Frame
Headboard + frame is the right choice when:
You want iron bed quality without a footboard. Some customers don't like footboards — they find them restrictive, they have a tall mattress that conflicts with the footboard height, or they prefer the open look at the foot of the bed. Headboard + frame gives you the stability of a matched system with the openness of no footboard.
You're furnishing a small bedroom. In rooms where space is tight, eliminating the footboard opens up the sightline across the room and removes several inches of furniture from the foot of the bed. The headboard + frame configuration is what we recommend most for small rooms because it balances quality, stability, and space efficiency.
You're taller. If your feet reach or extend past the end of the mattress, a footboard can be uncomfortable. Headboard + frame gives you the unrestricted foot of the bed you need.
You want the cleanest, most modern look. Interior designers gravitate toward headboard + frame because it puts all the visual emphasis on the headboard. The clean frame recedes and the headboard becomes the statement. It's a less traditional look than the complete bed, and for some rooms, that's exactly right.
When to Choose Complete Bed
Complete bed is the right choice when:
You want the classic iron bed look. If the image in your head when you think "iron bed" includes a headboard and a matching footboard with visible castings and scrollwork, that's the complete bed. It's the look that sells 85% of our orders for a reason.
The bed will be visible from multiple angles. If the foot of the bed faces a doorway, a hallway, or a sitting area, the footboard adds polish and intention that a bare mattress edge doesn't.
Maximum stability matters. The headboard-footboard-frame box is the most rigid configuration. If you share the bed with a partner, have an active sleeper situation, or simply want the bed to feel absolutely immovable, the complete bed delivers.
You're investing in a primary bedroom for the long term. A complete iron bed is a piece of furniture that lasts generations. It's the option customers choose when they want the bed to be the definitive anchor of the room for decades.
Can I Upgrade Later?
Yes. If you start with headboard only and later want to add a matched frame, or if you have headboard + frame and want to add the footboard, we can accommodate that. Contact us at (800) 378-1742 and reference your original order. We'll match the design and finish exactly.
The only caveat: if your headboard was ordered in a hand-applied patina finish, the added components will be a new application of the same finish. Because hand-applied finishes have natural variation, the new pieces will match closely but may not be identical to your existing headboard. This is the nature of handcrafted work. On smooth finishes like Matte Black or White Matte, the match will be very close.
Choose Your Configuration
Every configuration starts with the same foundation: a handcrafted iron headboard built in Los Angeles, finished by hand, and backed by a lifetime structural warranty. The difference is how much of the bed system you want around it.
